A rather slow-paced first-person dungeon crawl from 20th Century Fox's short-lived video game wing, Crypts Of Chaos gives the player a handful of weapons, ranging from a magic wand to a sword to a magic ring. (One nice "weapon" is a peace symbol, which can be used to dissuade any monster from fighting, unless it's on its home turf.) Gameplay is simple: kill or ward off every monster, and grab every treasure in sight without getting killed. While the graphics are adequate to the task of a first-person shooter -- <I>barely</I> -- the pacing of the game is often painfully slow. Yet it's computer games that took the first-person ball and ran with it -- including the early Ultima games -- and so Crypts Of Chaos was a taste of things to come.
